Possibly true. Definitely beside the point.

From MSNBC's daily Imus in the Morning newsletter for Monday, Dec. 13:
Imus: "Do you think we will ever admit that going into Iraq was just a hideous, horrible mistake? "

CNN's Lou Dobbs: "I think everyone knows that it was a mistake to rely upon the intelligence we did to make the judgments that we did and go to war. The fact is that it is old news. We are now involved in a conflict that we have no choice but to win. One can argue it from a hundred different perspectives but that ultimately is the position that we are in and that being the case with our young men and women in harms way. We've got to do everything we can to support them. The rest of it is extraneous in my opinion."
It is not old news! How many of the soldiers who cheered when Tom Wilson took on Donald Rumsfeld do you suppose voted for Bush? How many Americans who voted for Bush know "it was a mistake to rely upon the intelligence we did"? Do you think even George W. Fucking Bush knows it? And even if he does, why and how does that qualify him to set things right? He can't even supply the troops correctly. So far, he has not admitted he made a mistake - why should we trust him to win?

Asking us to trust him - after conceding that he got it wrong - is ridiculous and insulting. He steered the ship into the iceberg - not only ignoring but belittling all advice to the contrary - he has no right to, and no one else has a right to give him, a second chance.

A lot of Americans still haven't figured out he got it wrong. A lot of the right-wing attack dogs are still trying to destroy anyone who points out that Bush fucked up. For Lou Dobbs to lecture the president's critics is disgusting. He should be lecturing the president's supporters.

There's hope that at least the sharp end is getting sharper.
Erik Leaver, of the liberal Institute for Policy Studies, said this week's confrontation in Kuwait show many soldiers believe Washington is not being straight with them.

"This is not a well-articulated mission," Leaver said. "More and more we are hearing from military families that their sons or daughters are coming home on leave and saying, `Mom, I don't know what I'm doing over there.' The soldiers on the front lines there understand U.S. policy is not working."
It's hard to say, I hope so, because knowing they are being sacrified for no reason just makes their sacrifice even harder to accept. It's George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld who should be sacrificed.
